TSH tests are used to evaluate your levels of thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) in order to diagnose thyroid disease. When you have increased levels of TSH, it usually means that your thyroid is underactive and your body is releasing additional TSH to stimulate it. Low TSH can mean that your thyroid is overactive and your body is withholding TSH to try to slow it down. TSH tests are sometimes included in the blood work completed during physicals, but if you are experiencing any of these symptoms of thyroid disease, consider asking your physician if you should be screened.
Your thyroid is responsible for regulating the rate of your metabolism. If it is underactive, meaning that it is not producing enough T3 and T4 hormones, then your metabolism may slow down and you may gain weight, even though your appetite may be decreased. An overactive thyroid can over-stimulate your metabolism and lead to weight loss with an increased appetite. If your weight has changed without notable changes in diet or activity level, ask your doctor if your thyroid could be to blame.
Hot and Cold Intolerance
The revved-up feeling that accompanies an overactive thyroid can lead to increased sweating and feelings of warmth, which makes people increasingly intolerant to hot temperatures. They may also complain about being hot when other people are comfortable. An underactive thyroid alternatively makes people sensitive to the cold. With an underactive thyroid gland, people often feel cold even when the temperatures are warm.
People with both overactive and underactive thyroid glands often complain of persistent brain fog. This fogginess can contribute to reduced ability to concentrate and memory lapses. Both conditions can also cause fatigue that further exacerbates the fogginess.

Most minor wounds can be easily treated at home, though you may need to seek urgent care if the wound is large or if you can’t control the bleeding. Whenever you have a wound, cleaning it properly is the first stage of healing.
Watch this video to learn how to properly clean a wound. Put pressure on it for about 10 minutes to stop the bleeding, and then remove any dirt or debris you see, wash it with soap and water, and cover it with a bandage. Visit an urgent care center if you can’t clean the wound thoroughly or if the bleeding is excessive.
At Paramount Urgent Care, we are open seven days a week to provide urgent care in Orlando for injuries, flu, and a wide range of other emergent health issues. Find out more about our services by visiting www.paramounturgentcare.com.
If you take prescription medicines, there is a high likelihood that at least some of them are generic drugs. Generic medicines represent huge cost savings but offer the same benefits as the name-brand versions. Despite this, some people are still hesitant about taking generics, even if their urgent care or primary doctor says that generic substitutions are permitted. Are generics the right choice for you? Here are the answers to some of the questions that may be on your mind.
How is it possible that generic drugs are the same as brand-name drugs?
The formulations for brand-name medicines are only protected for a set period of time. After that period expires, other people can remake the same drug under a different name. To be approved, the FDA requires that the generic drug has the same active ingredient, strength, use, effect, delivery method, testing standards, and ability to achieve the same level for the same amount of time in the bloodstream. In other words, the FDA ensures that generics are the same as brand-name drugs before they are sold to the public.
Are there any differences between generic drugs and brand-name drugs?
Generic drugs are allowed to be a different color and shape, and they may include different inactive ingredients, such as flavorings and preservatives. Although the inactive ingredients may be different, the FDA must certify them all as safe. The reason that generic drugs are cheaper isn’t because they use inferior ingredients but rather that generic drug makers have far lower expenses, since they don’t have to pay for the same marketing, advertising, research, and initial testing that the creators of the drug do.
Is it always safe to use generic drugs?
There are some medications that your physician may recommend that you always take in the brand-name form. These include medication for hypothyroidism, blood thinners, and certain heart conditions.

Sometimes, even minor cuts can become problematic if they get infected. And if you have a medical condition that suppresses the immune system or delays wound healing, such as diabetes, it’s particularly important to visit an urgent care center for an infected wound. Cleanse the wound regularly, apply fresh dressings, and keep an eye out for the potential signs of an infection.
Seek medical care if the wound begins discharging cloudy fluid, or greenish or yellowish pus. A little pain and swelling is normal, but a wound may be infected if it displays worsening swelling, redness, tenderness, and pain. Red streak marks emanating away from the wound should be evaluated by a healthcare provider right away. Fever is another possible sign of a wound infection. If a wound infection is left untreated, it’s possible that serious complications can develop, so don’t delay seeking emergency care.
Cold turkey, gradual reduction, medications, counseling, and nicotine replacement products—these are the top mainstream methods of quitting smoking. But when you’ve tried everything a few times each, it may be time to try a new approach. Talk to a doctor at a walk-in clinic first, to ensure that any unconventional smoking cessation method you try will be safe for you, given your underlying health issues.
For schoolchildren, peer pressure can lead to some risky behaviors. It may even have been the reason why you first picked up a cigarette. Now that you’re ready to quit, use peer pressure in a positive way. Get together with someone close to you who also wants to quit smoking, like a family member, friend, or co-worker. Together, pick a mutual quit date. Spend the day together in a setting with zero access to tobacco. If you two make it past the first day, keep in close contact with each other. Give each other daily updates about your progress—and be honest! Your quit buddy is there to support you if you falter, and vice versa.
The threat of financial loss and the temptation of financial gain can both be powerful motivators. Some employers have encouraged their workers to quit smoking by offering financial incentives. It’s well worth the price, considering the extent to which tobacco use drives up healthcare premiums. Other people have bribed or threatened themselves. For example, if you and a friend both want to quit, agree that whoever fails to quit within a set period of time must pay the other person a set amount of money.
Another mental trick to try is to make cigarettes as unappealing as possible. On your quit date, throw out all of your cigarettes except for one. Put that cigarette in a dirty, germy place, like on top of the range hood in your kitchen. When you crave a smoke, allow yourself to take just one puff of that cigarette before putting it back on the range hood. Before long, the cigarette will acquire so much grime you won’t want to smoke it.
As part of our corporate medicine services, the providers at Paramount Urgent Care are pleased to offer smoking cessation assistance. Our walk-in clinics are located in Orlando, Clermont, Oviedo, and Casselberry. For more information, please visit www.paramounturgentcare.com.
