Could Your Nausea Be a Sign of Pregnancy?

If you’re actively trying to become pregnant, you’re probably monitoring yourself very carefully for the early signs of pregnancy. Nausea, often called morning sickness during pregnancy, is one of the most recognizable and common signs of pregnancy. If you think you could be pregnant, you can go to an urgent care center that has an onsite lab. A urine test can confirm your status, and the doctor can review your medications to ensure they are safe for use during pregnancy.

The Onset of Pregnancy Symptoms

Every woman is a little different. Some feel different within a couple of weeks of conception, while others are a few months into gestation before they experience any of the classic pregnancy symptoms. In most cases, nausea will first develop between two and eight weeks after conceiving. Throughout a woman’s pregnancy, some symptoms may resolve and new symptoms can develop because of the various changes the body goes through. For instance, nausea often resolves after the first trimester, although some women experience it for nine months.

Types of Pregnancy Symptoms

Because nausea during pregnancy is often referred to as morning sickness, women might not always recognize it as being indicative of pregnancy if it occurs at other times. But actually, morning sickness can occur any time of the day. In addition to nausea and missed periods, pregnancy often results in these symptoms:

  • Fatigue

  • Swollen or tender breasts

  • Headaches

  • Backaches

  • Frequent urination

  • Mood swings

  • Food cravings

  • Food aversions

Management of Nausea During Pregnancy

Nausea during pregnancy won’t necessarily result in vomiting. But if you do find it difficult to keep fluids down, you may need urgent care to prevent or treat dehydration. Avoid taking any medications during pregnancy unless they have been approved by your doctor. The following tips may help you manage nausea.

  • Eat smaller, but more frequent meals

  • Choose bland foods that lack odors

  • Eat a couple of soda crackers when nausea occurs

  • Get some fresh air
